Chapter Nine

My hands are shaking as I open my bedroom door. I drop the bag of breath mints on the floor and flop onto my bed. My eyes are stinging with fatigue, and I feel heavy all over. This day has been so long, but all I can remember is the kiss. I run my fingers along my bottom lip and smile. My lips stretch over my teeth, and I’m pretty sure I look like a deranged circus clown. I flip over to my stomach and reach for my phone. I scroll through and find what I’m looking for. I press the phone to my ear and listen to it ring.

“Hello?”

“Jordan, guess what.”

“What?” She sounds exhausted.

“Are you still sleeping?” I can hear her exhaling into the mouthpiece.

“Don’t judge me.”

I laugh. “I’m not judging! I wish I had slept all day, but at the same time what I did instead was pretty amazing...So, guess what.”

“Am I still supposed to guess? I thought we were past that.”

“Ok, party pooper, I’ll just tell you. I kissed Gabe. He kissed me. Gabe and I kissed!” I hold my breath, waiting for her response.

“What?” I can practically hear her rubbing her eyes.

“Can’t you hear me?!” How can she not be paying attention? This is kind of a big deal! I’m about to hang up when she starts gasping.

“Oh. My. Gosh. What?! What?!?! You guys did what?! Nita, oh my gosh, your first kiss! Oh my gosh! Can I come over?!”

I sit up and bounce on my bed happy that she's just as excited as I am. “Yes, please! Come right now!”

She squeals, almost bursting my eardrums, and hangs up the phone without another word. I hold the phone to my chest and kick my legs. My phone buzzes against my sternum. I hold it up to my face and smile even wider. Gabe.

“Hey there.” I love how he punctuates his texts. He totally doesn’t have to! It’s like he’s writing me a very short letter. Speaking of letters...

“How’s that letter coming along? I hope you’re waxing poetic. You know how much girls love waxing.” I can’t help but laugh at my cleverness.

“Good one. My letter is coming along great; thanks for asking. I think she’s gonna like it.”

“Are you going to tell me who this mystery girl is?” The thing I love about texting is being able to think my responses through. I don’t feel this confident in person, and my movie quoting is off the charts in the messenger app.

“Oh, I don’t think you know her. She’s beautiful, funny, head in the clouds, basically always asleep on her feet.”

I giggle to myself, thankful for the walls and lawn that separate us.

“She sounds like a real winner. Tell me, what are your intentions for this young lady?” I bite my lip, hoping not to come off like a desperate schoolgirl with a moon-sized crush. Another good thing about texting - ambiguous tones. I could always argue a different meaning if I have to save my skin.
